CEAI is a multi-disciplinary team of scientists, engineers, students, and community partners dedicated to innovating human-centered AI to benefit society. CEAI leads cross-disciplinary scientific research, facilitates project-based learning experiences, conducts extensive community outreach, hosts workshops and symposiums, and awards seed grants to support human-centered AI research across the university. A recent online profile summarizes this work.
  • Research: CEAI faculty are supported by awards from the National Science Foundation and the National Endowment for the Humanities for projects focusing on AI applied to criminal justice, micro-finance, social media, and artistic innovation.  We publish articles in prestigious venues on a range of topics, including using open-source technologies to safely deploy large language models, optimizing telehealth for diabetes management, discrimination in access to mental health care, and improving the fairness and transparency of recommendation algorithms.
  • Education: Our approach to education and training is to engage undergraduate students in research projects that have immediate impact. Through Service Learning capstone projects, dozens of students have worked hand-in-hand with local non-profits and Center faculty to apply cutting-edge AI systems to improve access to city council meetings, to monitor equity in the court system, and to track blight across the city.
  • Outreach: We organize community workshops on AI, academic networking events, distinguished speaker series, and a Lunch and Learn series. We provide seed grants to support AI research across the university, such as in social work, architecture, and biology. A complete listing of news and events can be found in the News section.
